Our Story
Below the Brine Bookshop was opened in 2021 by Harwich native Kristen Young, with the idea of creating a bright, welcoming space where locals and visitors could browse for books and strike up conversations about literature. Despite our tiny footprint, we strive to create a collection of titles that speaks to readers of all ages, with all sorts of interests.
Our shop space tells a little story of its own. All of our tables and shelving were handmade by Kristen's husband, Joe, using wood he reclaimed while remodeling their antique Harwich Port home, located a short walk away from Below the Brine.
We take our name from the poem The World Below the Brine, by Walt Whitman, which describes the other-worldliness that exists below the ocean's surface, and how viewing things from a new perspective can fundamentally change how we contemplate the world around us. We think it's similar to what can happen you when you crack open a good book.

Our shop offers new books for all ages and interests, along with journals, greeting cards and notebooks, many of which are locally made. We regularly host author events. Check our events schedule to see when your favorite writer might be making an appearance in Harwich Port!

Thanks for taking the time to learn about us. We hope to see you soon!
